Summary of Duties

Located in the College of Pharmacy, this Research Technologist position contributes to the fulfillment of the university’s mission and vision by developing, verifying and implementing investigative procedures to accomplish research goals for the Gibson lab in the Department of Pharmacotherapy.

This position conducts research and collects data in support of the study of pre-clinical models of rare genetic disease. The position is responsible for accomplishing research objectives in the laboratory under general direction, including the design of, documentation, and execution of experiments. This position also maintains the laboratory including ordering supplies and overseeing records and assists with research animals including animal breeding and colony management.

The Position

Laboratory and Animal Research | 55%

Under general supervision, conduct laboratory and animal research.

Assist PI with development and design of laboratory experiments.

Collection of data in support of the study of rare genetic disorders.

Perform primary cell culture experiments.

Troubleshoot experimental procedures including molecular biology experiments, cell culture experiments, and perform quality control on reagents.

Determine proper research methodology and appropriate experimental mechanisms.

Evaluate research protocols for accuracy and consistency.

Provide direction for the operations in the research laboratory.

Maintain and update data, analyze and prepare findings in reports suitable for both written and oral presentation and publication.

As directed write and edit research reports.

Perform analysis and interpretation of research data.

Assist PI with preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts.

Responsible for conducting experimental planning with mice to include drug injections, animal breeding for experiments, and genotyping using PCR.

Responsible for health documentation of treatments.

Responsible for colony management and collection of mice specimens.

Responsible for other mouse studies, including implementation of behavioral testing techniques such as anxiety and memory in open-field studies.

Procurement and Inventory Maintenance | 15%

Research vendors for best products, pricing and availability.

Orders lab supplies/consumables including chemical reagents, software upgrades, and replacement glassware as needed.

Receive shipments requested from vendors, verify correct items received, and communicate with Pharmacy Business Services, stock shelves/cupboards.

Laboratory Maintenance | 15%

Assist with the selection and maintenance of new laboratory equipment.

Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment.

Maintain laboratory records.

Properly dispose of laboratory waste, biomedical waste, broken glassware, and any other hazardous materials.

Keep laboratory clean and organized.

Assist with scheduling, instruction, and training of technicians, and students.

Participate in demonstrating laboratory techniques to students and new employees.

Lead technicians and temporary/student employees; monitor for safety; assist with setting of priorities and assigning daily responsibilities.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science and two years experience as a Research Technologist, or equivalent; OR an advanced Degree in an appropriate scientific field; OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements

B.S. degree in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, neurology, biology or related field required with preferred focus on molecular biology techniques and animal handling skills.

Familiarity with basic research design.

Prior working experience in a preclinical research lab, ordering and maintaining lab inventory, and standardization of protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with common laboratory procedures.

Experience working with small animals in a research setting.

Experience with cell culture.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Experience which demonstrates the ability to work independently and as a team player.
