Summary of Duties

This is a unique position with the purpose of significantly increasing the amount of forest land being managed sustainably under a written Forest Stewardship Plan. This position originates, develops, and conducts formal forestry education programs to new and established non-industrial forest landowners in southwest Washington. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, providing oversight, training and consultation to promote sound, responsible forestry and environmental management. In conjunction with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, this position supports requests for professional assessments related to forest stewardship management planning in southwest Washington with a focus on the Chehalis River Basin.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in forestry or relevant natural resources program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience or an Associate of Science degree in forest technology or relevant natural resources program discipline and four (4) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Related program experience may include formal education or volunteer acquired knowledge/skills in the areas of: program development, agricultural and natural resources education, or related field.

Reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed) is required. While using a private or WSU motor pool vehicle for official business, have current automobile liability insurance (meeting the requirements described in RCW 46.30.020 and RCW 46.29.090) and possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

1. M.S. Degree in Forest Resource Management, Forest Ecology, Forest Economics, Natural Resources Science, or other closely related field.
2. Two or more years of related experience and/or training in forest health, forest entomology, fire science and ecology, and/or silviculture.
3. Ability to conduct informal and formal needs assessments.
4. Ability to write a Forest Stewardship Plan.
5. Working knowledge of forest management and the natural° resource issues of the Chehalis River Basin.
6. A strong understanding of the needs and issues facing family & community forestland owners, and the ability to develop programs that empower people and build capacity within those communities.
7. Experience and ability to deliver long-term educational programs and short-term projects using a variety of methodologies and software.
8. Public relations/media experience.
9. Demonstrated competency using various electronic communication methods and equipment.
