Summary of Duties

Perform skilled veterinary technical duties in the management and recovery of post-operative and critical care patients as well as acts as a patient advocate. This includes assessing, monitoring, treating, and evaluating critically ill or injured animals in the Intensive Care Unit. Place IV catheters, male urinary catheters in canines and felines, assess level of pain, administer medication (both controlled and other), perform blood draws, monitor blood pressure, and pulse oximetry. Assist clinicians and students with incoming emergencies, assess and triage patients, and provide initial stabilization of patients. Order, inventory, and maintain supply of drugs and expendable items. Enter information into hospital computer system for recording all charges, procedures, and miscellaneous information for client billing. Provide thorough documentation of patient status on ICU records. Communicate treatment protocols with 4th year veterinary students and assist in explaining common emergency and critical care techniques and protocols according to industry standards.

Veterinary Specialist 1 – Critical Care
The WSU Critical Care is a 24/7 fully staffed fast growing service. Licensed technicians are always on duty helping to oversee and assist with patient stabilization and treatments. This team of outstanding professionals provide compassionate care at the highest level using the latest tools, medicines, and techniques. The staff handles the critically ill and emergent patients with round the clock observation and therapy. Technician duties include peripheral line placement, canine and feline urinary catheter placement, pain assessment, administering constant rate infusions, monitoring vitals including direct and indirect blood pressure, and patient advocacy. Good communication and team player are a must.

Veterinary Specialist 1 – Community Practice Technician
This position supports the fast paced Community Practice service that provides both wellness care and treatment for minor injuries of dogs and cats. There is a significant component of this job that involves performing routine dentistry and assisting in some oral surgery. Other duties include providing clinical expertise in canine and feline venipuncture, peripheral IV catheter placement, animal restraint, inducing and monitoring animals under anesthesia, and performing dental radiographs.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology; or registration, certification or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field and one year experience with the care and treatment of animals in a veterinary practice; or equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements

Must meet the required criteria (WAC 246-935-060) to be eligible to sit for the Washington State veterinary technician exam and must pass the exam the first time it is available.

Must pass WSU radiation safety training exam first time it is available.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a small animal veterinary setting preferred.
