Summary of Duties

An energetic scientist with diverse interests in basic and applied science is sought for a unique opportunity with Washington State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The successful postdoctoral candidate will apply their prior training and experience in advanced molecular microbiology and microbial genetics in support of multiple programs. The primary program concerns developing genetic methods to enable advanced physiological studies of marine microeukaryotes and carbon/nutrient cycling. Examples of other programs on which the fellow may participate include biofouling and biocorrosion of advanced composite materials and oil spill remediation.

Additional Information

This position will be through the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at WSU, Pullman, but the location of the work will be at the US Department of Energy, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sequim, WA. Expectations include active laboratory research, preparation of manuscripts for publication, presentation of results, and participation with grant writing.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in microbiology, molecular biology, or a similar field with an emphasis in molecular microbiology, synthetic biology, microbial genetics, or microbial physiology. Skills required: advanced molecular biology and biochemistry training with experience designing rigorous experiments to design, build and analyze vectors and mutations, characterize regulatory networks, and examine metabolism. Evidence of hands-on routine performance of real time PCR, protein purification, plasmid construction, cloning, mutation generation and analysis, and transformations in diverse genera is required. Experience cultivating and manipulating eukaryotes is preferred. Ability to work in biosafety level 2 (BSL2) laboratories with BSL2 organisms is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Excellent organization and fastidious work habits are required.
Prior training in DNA/protein sequence analysis and bioinformatics is desirable.
Prior experience with bacterial species relevant to human disease and biofilms (e.g., colon, oral cavity) is desired.
Prior experience with genetic circuits, regulation/feedback loops, and promoter selection and modification is desired.
Prior experience with protein modeling is desirable.
Prior experience with directed evolution and screening is desirable.
Prior training in environmental sample collection and analysis is desirable.
